Mastodon Reveals Heavyweight Guest Lineup for New Album ‘Marrow Deep’ Following Tragedy

Mastodon is turning immense personal tragedy into a triumphant new chapter. The Atlanta progressive metal titans have revealed a powerhouse roster of guest stars for their upcoming album, Marrow Deep, scheduled to drop on August 28.

Speaking with Kerrang!, the band confirmed that the new record will feature appearances from Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler, Lamb of God vocalist Randy Blythe, Gojira frontman Joe Duplantier, and Clutch’s Neil Fallon. Fallon previously lent his vocals to Mastodon’s iconic track “Blood and Thunder.” The news follows the release of the album’s first single, “Snakes for Dinner,” which features Queens of the Stone Age leader Josh Homme.

For drummer and vocalist Brann Dailor, securing Geezer Butler for the album was deeply emotional. Dailor’s mother, Michele Jeanne Lawrence, passed away in February 2025 and was a lifelong fanatic of the Black Sabbath bassist.

“She was always like, ‘[Butler] writes the lyrics!’” Dailor recalled. “She would absolutely love the song. It’s still a pinch-me moment on the record. He could have just hit an open A, and I would have still been like, ‘FEATURING GEEZER BUTLER ON THE OPEN A!’”

The road to Marrow Deep has been fraught with grief for the band. Just a month after the passing of Dailor’s mother, Mastodon announced the departure of founding guitarist Brent Hinds. Tragically, Hinds was killed in a motorcycle accident later that year in August 2025.

Despite the devastating losses, the remaining members are determined to honor their history while pushing forward.

“As we go forward, we will always carry and [recognize] Brent’s legacy, without a doubt,” bassist and vocalist Troy Sanders said. “We’ll never deny how huge of an influence, and how massive he was in the creation of Mastodon. But through the tragedy, there is triumph.”

Sanders emphasized that quitting was never an option for the band. “I’m proud of us for not just feeling overwhelmingly pitiful for ourselves, or just collapsing and saying, ‘Hey, we had a good run.’ It would be doing a massive disservice to our own being to not continue – there’s so much life in us.”

Following the August 28 release of Marrow Deep, Mastodon will hit the road for a U.S. tour kicking off in September.
