Hydra Head Records was an independent record label specializing in extreme metal music, founded in New Mexico by Aaron Turner (the frontman of Isis) in 1993. Originally established as a distribution company while Turner was still in high school, the label grew into a central pillar of the underground scene. To accommodate more experimental sounds, the label also managed an imprint, Hydra Head Noise Industries, which focused on noise and avant-garde music.
The Early Years and Move to Boston
In 1995, Turner moved to Boston to attend art school. During this period, the label’s trajectory shifted after he received a demo from the Wichita, Kansas, band Vent. That seven-inch single became the first official record released on the label. As Turner progressed through his education, the roster expanded to include local acts such as Roswell, Corrin, Piebald, and Converge.
After Turner graduated from college in 1999, the label became a full-time endeavor. In 2011, the headquarters relocated from its longtime home in Boston, Massachusetts, to Los Angeles, California.
Notable Artists and the Hydra Head Noise Industries Imprint
The label’s discography features a diverse array of influential artists, including Cave In, Xasthur, Kayo Dot, Boris, and Jesu. Other active signings during the label’s tenure included Botch, Khanate, and Harkonen. By maintaining the Hydra Head Noise Industries imprint, the label successfully balanced its extreme metal roots with more abstract, experimental projects.
The Imminent Demise and Final Releases
On September 11, 2012, Turner announced the “imminent demise of Hydra Head Records.” He stated that the label would begin shutting down that December by ceasing new releases. However, the label remained operational for several years to maintain its back catalog and pay off substantial debts. During this winding-down phase, the label released Worship is the Cleansing of the Imagination, a split album between JK Flesh and Prurient.
The Los Angeles office officially closed in May 2013. In 2017, the label released Oxbow’s Thin Black Duke, an album that had been delayed during the winding-down period. While Turner appeared open to releasing music on a case-by-case basis at that time, he expressed in a 2018 interview that he had no interest in returning to the label as a full-time commitment. One of the label’s final major releases was Final Transmission by Cave In, issued on June 7, 2019.
