AFI Decemberunderground is back on vinyl for the first time since 2006. The band has announced a 20th anniversary reissue of their landmark album via Interscope, with three variants available for pre-order now.
The flagship edition is a D2C exclusive: the album pressed on a black-and-white A-side/B-side split LP, housed in a gatefold jacket that recreates the original sleeve, and bundled with a bonus 7″ on opaque white vinyl. That 7″ includes two tracks that most fans have never heard on a proper release — the previously unreleased “Wolf and the Lamb (Demo)” and the long-rare “On the Arrow”, which originally surfaced as an iTunes pre-order bonus in 2006: a standard black LP and a limited transparent smoke pressing via RSD Essentials round out the three variants.
Decemberunderground was AFI’s seventh studio album and their commercial peak — it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and is certified Platinum by the RIAA. Its lead single, “Miss Murder,” remains the band’s biggest charting song, reaching No. 24 on the Hot 100 and topping the Alternative Songs chart. “Love Like Winter” and “The Missing Frame” rounded out its singles run.
Frontman Davey Havok offered this on the album’s title: “DECEMBERUNDERGROUND is a time and a place. It is where the cold can huddle together in darkness and isolation. It is a community of those detached and disillusioned who flee to love, like winter, in the recesses below the rest of the world.”
The reissue lands alongside AFI’s current U.S. tour behind their 2025 album Silver Bleeds the Black Sun… — which itself tips its hat to Decemberunderground with its closing track, “Nooneunderground.” A video for that track dropped this week.
